Overview
Hypothesis is a tool that enables you to make notes in the margins of digital texts and videos anywhere on the web and share them with others. Using social annotation fosters collaborative discussion, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of the material.
Instructions
- In Brightspace, navigate to the course and content module where the reading is to be placed.
- From the Existing Activities menu, click on the Hypothesis Reading option.

- In the Add Activity box > Assignment details box, select the reading or video's location.
- Available locations:
- URL - Web Page | PDF
- Google Drive -PDF
- OneDrive - PDF
- D2L - PDF
- JSTOR - Article
- YouTube - Video

- Select the specific article, link, pdf, or video then click the grey continue button.
- Note: The first time you select Google Drive, OneDrive, or D2L (Brightspace), Hypothesis will request permission to access these locations.

- The following assignment settings are optional:
- Title: the default name is Hypothesis assignment. Best practice is to rename this to align with the selected item.
- Max Points: the default is no points
- Auto Grading: Enable for automatic participation grading. Selecting this will open additional grading options.
- Grading type: Proportional | All or nothing
- Activity calculation: Calculate cumulative | Calculate separately
- Annotations and replies > GOAL (number of required annotations per student)
- Group Assignment: Selecting this will open connect to your Group categories in Brightspace.
- Note: the first time you select this option Hypothesis will ask for your permission to access this area in your Brightspace course.
- In the Group Set box, select the appropriate group.
- Click the grey Continue button.

- Completed Hypothesis assignment.
