How To Connect a Windows Computer to the Residential Wired Network

Overview

These instructions are for Oswego faculty, staff, and students who live in residential buildings needing their Windows computers to the wired network. These instructions work for both plugging an Ethernet cable directly into the wall jack or into a campus-provided Ethernet switch.

Instructions

 

1) Right-click on the network icon in the bottom right corner of your screen and select "Open Network and Sharing Center".

2) Select "Change adapter settings" from the left side of the window.

3) Right-click on the Ethernet adapter and go to Properties.

4) Within the Properties window, select the Authentication tab. Make sure the Remember my credentials... box is unchecked. (If the Authentication tab is unavailable, scroll down to the bottom of the page for further instructions.)

5) Within the same window, select "Additional Settings"...

6) Check the "Specify authentication mode" box and select "User authentication". Make sure the "Enable single sign on for this network" box is unchecked. Click "OK" to save the settings.

7) Click OK in the Ethernet Properties window.

8) As soon as you click OK, you should be prompted to enter in your Laker NetID and password. If you're not, reconnect your Ethernet cable to your computer. Once you enter your credentials, click OK to attempt to connect. After a few seconds, it should connect successfully.

Note: Sometimes in newer versions of Windows 10, the authentication tab will not automatically appear.

To resolve this, follow these instructions to enable this setting:

  1. From the Windows 10 Start screen, type Control Panel and then press the Enter key. ...
  2. Select Administrative Tools.
  3. Select Services.
  4. Right-click on Wired AutoConfig and select Properties. (you might have to scroll down in this list)
  5. Set Startup type to Automatic.
  6. Click on Start and wait for the service to start. 

*After configured, please go back to the top at step 4 to proceed.*
