Grades: Allowing Quizzes to exceed maximum score

Overview

This is an advanced use of the Grade book that allows a student to have the possibility of extra credit on a Quiz without using specifically designated extra credit questions.  In practice this is done by providing students with enough questions to potentially earn, for example, 105/100 on a Quiz.  This article presumes an already existing Quiz is being modified.  If a new Quiz is being created, some of these options may be set when the Quiz is initially linked to the Grade book.

Instructions

Prior to opening the Quiz to students

  1. Enter the course and use the Green NavBar to go to Course Tools > Quizzes.
    1. Locate the desired quiz then select Edit from the pull-down menu.
      1. In the Evaluation & Feedback area, uncheck the "Auto-publish attempt results immediately upon completion" option and check the "Synchronize to grade book on publish". This is done to avoid confusing students until the grades have been modified.

    1. Locate the Quiz edited in Step 1.1 then use the pull-down menu to select Edit.
    2. Set the Maximum Points to the denominator you want the quiz graded out of (in our example we would be changing it from 100 to 105).
    3. Check the Can Exceed box.
Grading area, maximum points & can exceed options.
    4. Click the blue Save and Close button.
    5. In the Confirmation pop-up box asking if you really want to make this change, click the blue Yes button.
  3. The Quiz is now ready for students to take.

After the completion of the quiz

  1. Use the Green NavBar to go to Course Tools > Quizzes.
    1. Locate the desired quiz then select Grade from the pull-down menu.
      1. Scroll to the bottom of the page and make sure all students are on the same page (the easiest option is to change the paging to “200 per page” in the lower left corner).
      2. Return to the top of the page and use the “Super Checkmark” to select all students/attempts.
      3. Just above the spreadsheet, click the blue Publish option.  You should see the Status column change to the current date and time.

    1. Locate the desired quiz and use the pull-down menu to select Edit.

    3. Click the blue Save and Close.
      1. You may get a warning about the max points exceeding the new maximum points. If you see this warning, it can be ignored. In our example, the student grade will now effectively be 105/100, and their percentages will reflect this.
    4. After the quiz grades are manually published out, you may wish to make an Announcement stating that the grades are now available.
