Windows 11 Migration Information

Overview

As part of an ongoing commitment to providing a secure and efficient technology environment, Campus Technology Services (CTS) is excited to announce a campus-wide transition to Windows 11. This upgrade will offer enhanced security features, improved performance and a more seamless user experience for everyone on campus. CTS understands that change can bring questions, and they are ready to support you every step of the way. Below, you’ll find important details about the transition timeline, support resources, and what you can expect as the campus moves forward.

Microsoft will be ending support for Windows 10 on Oct. 14, 2025. After this date, Microsoft will stop providing security updates to client devices, which puts those devices and the campus at risk. Campus Technology Services (CTS) has piloted migrating some campus computers to Windows 11 and is now ready to work with the campus to make a full migration.

Upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11 involves planning a seamless transition to ensure minimal disruption to faculty, staff, and students. The process includes determining hardware compatibility as only certain models are compatible, determining software compatibility, and providing training on the new features. Windows 11 enhances system performance, accessibility features, security features, and offers a refreshed user interface with minor changes.

The process for upgrading to Windows 11 includes the following:

  1. Determining if Windows 11 is already installed on your computer
  2. Determining hardware compatibility
  3. Determining software compatibility
  4. Submitting a Windows 11 Upgrade request ticket, if your hardware/software are compatible
  5. Purchasing new equipment if your hardware/software are incompatible
  6. Participating in training (optional)

Each of the items above is discussed in the sections below. If you have any questions along the way, please feel free to reach out to Campus Technology Services (CTS) so we can assist.

Determining Hardware Compatibility

As we work to transition to Windows 11, it is important to note that this upgrade has specific hardware requirements. To meet security requirements, only specific models can be upgraded.

Not sure what your model number is?
Model numbers are generally listed on the computer case.  If you are unable to find it or would like to verify it, you can follow these steps:

  1. In the Windows search bar at the bottom of your screen, type "System Information" and press "Enter."
  2. In the window that opens, look for the item called "System Model." The value for that item is the model of your computer.

Dell Optiplex and Latitude models compatible with Windows 11
The campus primarily uses the Dell Optiplex desktop and Dell Latitude laptop models.  The following models have been tested and are compatible with Windows 11:

    • Compatible OptiPlex desktop models: 5000, 5070, 5080, 5090, 70101, 70201, 7060, 7070, and 7090
    • Compatible Latitude laptop models: 5400, 5420, 5430, 5440, 5450, 5490, 5500, 5590, 7200, 7400, 7490, and 7520

1 Note the Optiplex 7010 and 7020 models are compatible only if purchased within the last three years (2021-2024).  Dell has models with the same number that originate back to the 2012-2015 time frame that are not compatible.

Models outside the Dell Optiplex and Latitude series
If your model is not part of the Optiplex or Latitude series or is not a Dell, you can verify if it is compatible by doing one of the following below:

If your hardware is compatible with Windows 11, please also verify software compatibility in the next section. If both hardware and software are compatible, please submit a Windows 11 Upgrade ticket. CTS staff will then schedule an appointment with you. Please have your data backed up prior to the appointment and allow 2-4 hours for the install to take place. Note the install is a re-image of the device and could take longer depending on the age of equipment and data needing to be restored.
