Course Management - Using the Manage Dates tool

Overview

The purpose of this document is to provide an overview and guidance on how to use the Managing Dates Feature in Brightspace.

Many faculty use Manage Dates to review and update course dates prior to the start of a semester. This tool allows you to see all dates in one location and make quick edits from a single screen, which is especially helpful when the entire semester schedule needs adjustment.

This document covers:

  • Locating Manage Dates in Brightspace

  • How to filter content

  • How to change a single date

  • How to change dates in bulk

Instructions

Locating the Manage Date Tool

  1. In the Minibar at the top of the screen, select Course Tools, then choose Course Admin.

  2. In Course Administration, look for Manage Dates.

Tip: You can sort this page by category or by name to find links faster.

Filtering Content

The Manage Dates page shows every item in your course. To simplify the view, use the filter tool at the top:

  1. Check Specific Tools.

  2. Select the Content type or Course Activity boxes you want to view.

  3. Click Apply Filter.

Note: The "Show Advanced Filter" option allows you to filter further by name, due date, duration, or calendar status.

Changing a Single Date

The blue dashes indicate editable information:

  • Click the first blue dash to change a Due Date.

  • Click the dashes in the second or third columns to change Start and End dates.

Edit Due Date Option:

Note: Some items show "N/A." For Discussions, due dates must often be set within the Discussion tool itself rather than the Date Manager.

Edit Availability Option:

Changing Multiple Dates at Once

Select the checkboxes next to the items you wish to adjust. You can use the "super" checkbox at the top to select all items currently visible.

Hint: If you are using a filter, only the filtered items will be adjusted.

Bulk Edit Dates: This allows you to manually change the specific dates for all selected items on one screen.

Bulk Offset Dates: This shifts dates based on a specific timeframe.

  1. Offset by direction and range: Move dates forward or backward by a specific number of days or hours.

  2. Calculate range between two dates: Use this to find the exact number of days between two terms (e.g., Summer 2022 start vs. Summer 2023 start) to use in the offset tool.
