How to Use a Verizon Hotspot (MiFi) Device

Overview

This article outlines instructions on how to use a Verizon hotspot (MiFi) device that has been loaned to you by CTS.

Instructions

  1. Hold the power button down on the hotspot for about two seconds and then let go.  In a little bit, the device's display will light up with a "MiFi" logo on it and then settle on a screen that will say "Wi-Fi-ON" with "Menu" and "Help" buttons.  At this point, the hotspot/MiFi is ready for connections.

  2. In the top left of the WiFi powered-on screen, look at the number of bars you have indicating the strength of the cellular signal. You may need to move the hotspot/MiFi to different locations to get a stronger signal.  This is IMPORTANT as the weaker the signal, the slower the connection.

  3. On the device you would like to use such as your laptop, go to your wireless networks and then choose the one that starts with "Verizon-MiFi....."  If it doesn't appear, give it a couple of minutes for your device to re-scan your available wireless networks.

  4. Once connected, you will be prompted for a password. Use the password typed on the label of the bag the hotspot/MiFi came in.

  5. You should be connected and can start using the Internet.
