Visiting Assistant Professor (VAP)/Lecturer computer replacements

Overview

Once a year, a call goes out to academic departments to request replacement computers for visiting assistant professors (VAPs)/lecturers.  The call typically goes out the beginning of November. For 2024, the call will go out Nov. 1. This program is intended to replace a visiting assistant professor's primary machine.  It is not intended to cover multiple machines, lab machines, student workstations, nor adjunct machines. 

Eligibility Criteria

For those that qualify for a new computer, laptops are highly encouraged for the most mobility.

Please note the following:

  1. Any VAP/lecturer that has worked for the College two or more years in a VAP/lecturer role and whose machine meets the age requirements will be eligible to receive a new computer.   Laptop selections are highly encouraged for the most mobility. 
  2. Any VAP/lecturer that has worked for the College less than two years in a VAP/lecturer role will receive a gently used desktop computer.
  3. An academic department is one considered to be in CLAS, SCMA, SOB, or SOE.
  4. Computers to be replaced must have been purchased prior to 9/1/2020 (please contact Inventory Control at inventory@oswego.edu if unsure).
  5. The SUNY Tag of the replacement machine is required.
  6. The cost of the replacement machine with the standard set of software will be covered by the replacement plan.  Any additional costs will be assumed by the department.
  7. Upon the install of a new/used computer, the old one will be removed from the department.
  8. Fulfillment will be prioritized based on the age of the machine and history of incidents and will occur over the course of six months.
  9. Requests are due at the close of business on November 15, 2024.  

Submission Requests

VAPs/Lecturers that have worked in a VAP/lecturer role for two or more years
VAPs/Lecturers that have worked in a VAP/lecturer role for two or more years and who meet the other eligibility criteria listed above can choose from the following options.  

  1. Apple 13" MacBook Air 
  2. Apple 14" MacBook Pro
  3. Apple Desktop - iMac 24"
  4. Dell Latitude E5450 14" Ultrabook
  5. Dell Optiplex 7020 Desktop

VAPs/Lecturers that have worked in a VAP/lecturer role for less than two years
VAPs/Lecturers that have worked in a VAP/lecturer role for less than two years and who meet the other eligibility criteria listed above can request a newer used computer.  

  1. Gently used computer

After the call has closed, each submitted request will be reviewed to ensure it meets the eligibility criteria listed above. After a request has been reviewed, an email will be sent to the requestor of the status. Please note fulfillment of approved requests is typically one-three months after the call closes. Another email will be sent at a later time when the machine is ready to be installed.
