Overview
Google Chrome's update to version 102 has resulted in a pop-up message regarding your Google Chrome profile being managed by SUNY Oswego. This pop-up will display for anyone who does not use the Google sync feature within Chrome. Google sync allows you to save your bookmarks, history, passwords, and other settings in your profile making them available anytime you log into Chrome, regardless of device. Below are some frequently asked questions describing more about the pop-up message and what your options are so you don't have to see it every time you use Chrome.
What is the pop-up message?
Are you spying on me?
- No, CTS has no way to view or manage your data, bookmarks, or passwords. This message is misleading.
Why is it happening?
- This started with a Google Chrome update to version 102
How do I know what version of Google Chrome I have?
- Open Chrome on a PC or Mac
- Click the three dots in the upper-right corner of the window.
- Hover your cursor over "Help."
- Click "About Google Chrome."
Your version will appear on this screen.
What are my options?
- Turn Google sync on
- Leave Google sync off
- Use Chrome's Guest mode
What do these options do?
Turning Google Sync On
- Will make the pop-up message go away
- Preserves Chrome bookmarks, history, and other settings across devices
- Keeps your existing Chrome profile
Leaving Google Sync Turned Off
- You will always be presented with the pop-up message each time you launch Chrome.
- In the pop-up there is an option to "Keep local browsing data (bookmarks, passwords, history, etc.)."
- If you leave this box unchecked:
- A new Chrome profile is created that does not preserve your existing bookmarks
- You will need to pick a color theme
- If you check the box:
- Your existing bookmarks will be preserved in your existing profile
- No color theme change
Using Guest Mode
- Always will need to sign in to LakerApps
- Any existing bookmarks are not preserved
- No bookmarks can be added
How do I see if Google Sync is turned on/off or use Guest Mode?
- Click your profile icon at the top right of the browser
- The arrow points to the sync status. Clicking on the sync on or off will allow you to toggle between them.
Turning Guest mode on
- Click your profile icon at the top right of the browser
- Select Guest
The browser will reopen as guest
