New - 16 character passwords coming Oct. 1

To help make SUNY Oswego accounts safer, 16-character passwords are being required. Longer passwords are harder to hack.

You don’t have to wait until Oct. 1 though to have a stronger password.  To comply with the new policy, you can change your password now.

  1. Login to the Account Tools website and click on “Change Your Password.” Use the tips below to come up with a strong password.
  2. From the left navigation, click on “Security Question” to make sure you have a security question set in the event you forget your new password.
    1. If at any time you forget your new password, you can reset it at www.oswego.edu/reset as long as you completed step 2 above.
  3. Click the "Logout" button.

Here are some tips for creating your new password:

  • Use a phrase that is at least sixteen characters long to help you remember it.
  • Use numbers, upper and lower case letters, and any of the following symbols: ! @ # $ % ^ & * + _ - , . and spaces.
  • Make your SUNY Oswego password different from any other password you use online, including those used for personal sites.
  • Don’t write the password down anywhere

We appreciate everyone’s efforts to make your SUNY Oswego account safer.

Common terminology used with your SUNY Oswego account

  • Laker NetID: this is the short version of your account.  It is a username that is randomly generated using some combination of your first and last name. Refer to the "Forgot your email address or Laker NetID?" section below to find out what your Laker NetID is.
  • LakerApps: this is the suite of Google applications used at SUNY Oswego.  It collectively refers to Gmail, Calendar, Drive, etc. Logging into these services requires your email address rather than your Laker NetID.
  • Multi-factor authentication (MFA): Passwords are no longer considered to be the most secure way to protect accounts. Most services at SUNY Oswego require a password and a second layer of authentication such as a text message to your phone.  This additional layer is called MFA.

Activate Your Account

If you are a new student or employee, you'll need to activate your account and setup multi-factor authentication (MFA) to have full access to digital services.  Please complete all three steps:

  1. Activate your account
  2. Set up MFA for Google services (Gmail, Calendar, Drive, etc.)
  3. Set up MFA for remaining services (myOswego, Brightspace, etc.)

Once all three steps are completed, you're account will be all set.
