CrowdStrike Falcon

Service Description

Campus Technology Services (CTS) is working on a project to replace the existing Cylance endpoint detection and response (EDR) software with CrowdStrike Falcon. CTS started updating college-owned computers with the new software in July.

CrowdStrike Falcon protects computers from viruses, malware, and ever-evolving new security threats, such as ransomware. In an age where security threats affect many college institutions, 24-hour, 7-days-a-week monitoring has become essential. CrowdStrike gives SUNY Oswego this added monitoring to help reduce the impact of security threats that could drastically disrupt the university's business.

The migration to CrowdStrike Falcon will occur in multiple phases.

Phase 1: Installation of CrowdStrike Falcon on college-owned devices
The first phase of the migration installs CrowdStrike Falcon on college-owned devices in a “learning” mode.

This phase began July 8 and will continue as devices connect to the campus network.  The install takes place remotely through the network on college-owned computers.  It has no noticeable impact and will not require any reboots.  For Macs, the install will take place whether the device is physically on-campus or off.  For PCs, the install will take place the next time the device is connected to the campus network (either on-campus or via VPN).

Phase 2: Removal of Cylance and full activation of CrowdStrike Falcon on college-owned devices
The second phase of the migration will disable Cylance and fully activate CrowdStrike Falcon.

This phase will also be completed remotely through the network starting Aug. 12.  It will not have a noticeable impact and not require a reboot. For Macs, the install will take place whether the device is physically on-campus or off.  For PCs, the install will take place the next time the device is connected to the campus network (either on-campus or via VPN).
